DPI vs CPI: What Your Mouse Sensor Spec Actually Means
"16,000 DPI" on a mouse box is one of the most misunderstood specs in PC hardware. Technically, the correct term is CPI — counts per inch, the number of discrete position updates the sensor reports for every inch of physical movement. "DPI" (dots per inch) is a printing term that got adopted by marketing decades ago and stuck. Functionally, for a mouse, they mean the same thing.
The critical detail most people miss: the number on the box is the sensor's maximum capability, not what your mouse is actually set to right now. Your effective sensitivity depends on whatever CPI value is currently configured — via manufacturer software, onboard DPI buttons, or a factory default — which is very often a fraction of the sensor's ceiling.
Higher isn't automatically better
A higher CPI means the cursor moves further on screen for the same physical hand movement. Competitive players often actually prefer lower sensitivities (400–1600 CPI) for more precise aim, reserving high CPI for fast desktop navigation across multiple 4K monitors. The "best" number is about matching your hand movement to your monitor resolution and use case, not maximizing the spec sheet.
Measuring your actual CPI
Since software-reported CPI can drift from what the sensor is truly outputting (especially with older drivers or a misconfigured surface), the only fully trustworthy check is a physical one: move the mouse a known distance and count how many position units the browser actually reports.
