What this speed test measures

Four numbers come out of this test, and each tells you something different:

  • Download speed, how fast data can travel from the internet to your device, measured in Mbps (megabits per second) or Gbps for very fast connections.
  • Upload speed, how fast data travels the other direction, from your device out to the internet.
  • Ping, also called latency, how long it takes a small piece of data to make a round trip between your device and a server, measured in milliseconds.
  • Jitter, how consistent that round-trip time is from one moment to the next, also in milliseconds.

How to use the speed test

  • Close other apps and browser tabs that might be using bandwidth in the background.
  • Connect via Ethernet if you can, or get as close to your router as possible if testing over WiFi.
  • Click start and let the test run without switching tabs or apps.
  • Run it two or three times, ideally at different points in the day, rather than trusting a single result.

Device test vs your router's real connection speed

Worth knowing the difference between two related but distinct things. What this test measures is your device speed, the full path from your specific device, through your WiFi or Ethernet connection, to the internet. That's different from the raw speed arriving at your router from your provider, which is what a router or modem's own built-in speed test (if it has one) would isolate. If your device test comes back noticeably lower than your plan's advertised speed, comparing it against your router's own reading, if available, helps you figure out whether the bottleneck is your provider or something happening inside your own home, like WiFi signal strength or an older device.

Ping and jitter

Why your results vary between different speed test sites

If you've run a speed test on two or three different sites and gotten noticeably different numbers, that's real and expected, not something wrong with your connection. Every speed test measures your connection to a specific server or group of servers, and where that server sits matters. A test run against a server inside your own provider's network will often read faster than one run against a neutral, more distant server, since the data has a shorter, less congested path to travel. Neither number is wrong, they're genuinely measuring slightly different things: one leans toward best-case performance within your provider's own infrastructure, the other reflects more of what you'd experience reaching an average website out on the open internet. If you want the most honest, real-world picture, running a couple of tests from different tools and looking at the general range rather than fixating on one exact number is the more reliable approach.

Why speed tests use multiple connections at once

This explains a common point of confusion: your speed test says 500 Mbps, but a specific file download somewhere else is crawling along at a fraction of that. Most speed tests, this one included, measure your connection's total capacity by opening several parallel connections at once, which better reflects what your line can actually handle in aggregate. A single file download, on the other hand, is often limited by how fast the server hosting that one file can send data to you, not by your connection's total capacity. Your internet isn't underperforming in that case, you're just seeing two different things: your line's total available capacity versus the sending speed of one specific source.

A limitation worth knowing about on very fast connections

If you're on a multi-gigabit fiber plan, worth knowing plainly: at very high speeds, the browser itself can become part of the bottleneck before your actual line speed does, limited by how much data JavaScript can realistically process and how many parallel connections a browser will sustain. A result that reads somewhat below your plan's rated multi-gig speed on a browser-based test like this one doesn't necessarily mean your connection is underperforming, it can simply mean the browser is the limiting factor rather than your fiber line. For certifying the absolute maximum on very high-end connections, a dedicated desktop speed test application will generally push closer to your true ceiling than any browser tab can.

Troubleshooting slow or inconsistent results

  • Results are consistently well below your plan's advertised speed. Restart your modem and router first, this resolves a surprising number of temporary slowdowns. Then try a wired Ethernet connection to rule out WiFi as the bottleneck.
  • Results vary a lot between attempts. Some variation is normal, especially over WiFi or during peak evening hours when more people in your area are online at once. Test a few times across different times of day for a more representative picture.
  • You're connected to a VPN. A speed test run while connected to a VPN measures your connection through that VPN server, not your raw ISP connection, and can show meaningfully lower numbers that have nothing to do with your actual plan. Disconnect the VPN before testing if you want your true connection speed.
  • WiFi speed is much lower than wired speed on the same connection. That points to your WiFi setup, signal strength, router age, or distance from the router, rather than your internet plan itself.
  • Everything checks out and speeds are still consistently low. That's worth raising directly with your provider, since a persistent, significant gap below your plan's advertised speed, tested wired and at multiple times of day, is something they're generally responsible for addressing.
