Fills your whole screen with a solid color so you can spot dead, stuck, or bright pixels, plus backlight bleed and IPS glow. Eight swatches, a fullscreen mode, and an auto-cycle sweep that walks through all of them for you.

How to read the results

  • Dead pixel: stays black/unlit no matter what color fills the screen — most visible against White, Red, Green, or Blue.
  • Stuck pixel: shows a single color (often red, green, or blue) regardless of the fill — most visible against Black or a contrasting fill.
  • Bright pixel: appears permanently white or overly bright — most visible against Black.
  • Backlight bleed / IPS glow: uneven brighter patches near the screen edges or corners — check on the Black fill, ideally in a dim room and in fullscreen.

Why monitor testing matters

Manufacturing defects in LCD and OLED panels are common enough that most vendors publish an explicit "acceptable dead pixel count" policy rather than guaranteeing a perfect panel. The only way to know whether your specific unit falls inside or outside that policy is to actually look — and a single glance at your desktop background rarely reveals a stuck or dead pixel sitting quietly inside a similarly-colored icon or window. A deliberate, full-screen, color-by-color sweep is the only reliable way to catch these early, while you still have a return or warranty window open.

Tips for accurate results

  • Run the test in fullscreen, in a dim room, at or near maximum brightness — glare and reflections hide faint stuck or dead pixels.
  • Clean the screen with a dry microfiber cloth before testing — dust specks and smudges are easy to mistake for a dead pixel, and vice versa. Avoid liquids or harsh chemicals on the panel.
  • Sit close enough to inspect the panel directly, and scan it in sections rather than trying to take in the whole screen at once.
  • Check every one of the eight colors — a stuck pixel that's invisible on White may be obvious on Black, and vice versa.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a dead pixel and a stuck pixel?

A dead pixel is unlit and stays black regardless of what color the screen is showing. A stuck pixel is lit but locked to one color (commonly red, green, or blue) instead of changing with the rest of the screen.

Can a stuck pixel be fixed?

Sometimes. Stuck pixels are occasionally caused by a subpixel transistor that's temporarily latched rather than truly failed, and some people have success gently massaging the area or running rapid color-cycling patterns. Dead pixels (no signal reaching the subpixel at all) are almost always permanent.

Why does my screen look slightly different in Black fullscreen depending on the angle I view it from?

That's normal panel behavior, especially on IPS panels, and is a separate phenomenon from dead/stuck pixels — it's viewing-angle-related glow, not a defect in an individual pixel.

How many dead pixels are considered acceptable?

It varies by manufacturer and panel grade — some allow zero, others allow a handful depending on location on the screen. Check your specific product's warranty documentation; this tool only helps you find pixel issues, not judge them against a policy.
